Michelle Drapkin, PhD

…is the National Program Coordinator for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Central Office, Mental Health Services Motivational Enhancement Therapy Training Program. She was responsible for design and implementation of a national curriculum for training VA clinicians in MET, an evidence-based practice based on Motivational Interviewing, targeted at treating substance use disorders, overseeing all components of the training program in addition to serving as the Master Trainer. This includes leading up 15 trainers, 75 training consultants, and over 400 training participants. She also leads up the program evaluation related to the training program.

Dr. Drapkin also is a Clinical Associate at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine and an adjunct professor at both Rutgers – The State University of New Jersey and The College of New Jersey. Dr. Drapkin received her PhD from Rutgers and completed both her Clinical Psychology internship and postdoctoral fellowship in treatment outcomes research at the University of California, San Diego/VA San Diego. She has been involved in and funded by National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) research since 1999, including National Research Service Awards (T32) for both her predoctoral and postdoctoral training. Dr. Drapkin has presented her research both nationally and internationally and has over twenty publications. Her current research focuses on examining mechanisms of change in treatment for alcohol and other substance use disorders by analyzing individual time courses. She also an investigator on a multisite grant investigating the interaction of comorbid disorders (i.e., depression and PTSD comorbid with substance use disorders). Dr. Drapkin is licensed in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania and sees a few patients in a private practice.

She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), trained by Drs. William Miller and Theresa Moyers. She is also trained in the Motivational Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale. Dr. Drapkin has given a variety of trainings across the country in various formats and is experienced with training individuals with different educational and cultural backgrounds.

Dr. Drapkin is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and resides in the greater Philadelphia, PA area and is available for trainings nationally and internationally.
